Wednesday 12 May sailing
Just four boats took to the start line for the 5 p.m. race in a light breeze which lead to a short
figure-eight course being set. Initially, the fleet stuck together and a number of place changes
occurred but the breeze increased and Kevin Milton pulled out a lead. Dennis King sailing his
Streaker managed to misjudge the shallows and allowed Malcolm Davidson to pass, a position
which was unchanged to the end. The two lead boats managed three laps before the race was
finished after approximately 40 minutes whilst the two slower boats completed just two.
Kevin Milton whilst taking line honours was beaten by 23 seconds on handicap by Bob
Curstemont.
Nine boats started the 7 p.m race in a diminishing breeze. Again a short figure of eight course was
set. The wind was not only very light but shifty and several boats were noted to be going
backwards shortly after the start.
Paul Kelly managed to get away but everyone was struggling and the race was finished as Paul
had taken nearly 20 minutes to get round and Ray Kemish in his Rooster 8.1 another seven
minutes behind. The wind was almost none existent by the time Kevin Last, who in a rare event
lived up to his name, crossed the finish line 11 minutes after Paul.
